The german “du” means “you” (to friends & family), while your ancient “thou” would be comparable to our “Sie” , the polite form of adressing.
Works like the plural mode and can be mixed up with it, some times!

@nicowob ja klar, ich auch, es war ja eigentlich nicht wirklich an dich gerichtet, sondern eher an die die sich etwas mit Sprache auskennen bzw. in der Englischen Sprachgeschichte oder Bibel, also deswegen habe ich es ja auch auf Englisch geschrieben!

hi i´m german. its a difficult case with “ihnen” and “dir” . so if you talk to a friend or an unkown teenager than you say “dir”. that´s the unformal way. but formal, to your boss oder teacher or older people and unnkown persons you have to say “Ihnen”.. ps: sorry for my english when it´s wrong xD

Thanks for the comment Justin, but actually they are both correct. You have given the formal version and in the video we use the informal phrase.
