How Can I start thinking on my feet and speaking more clearly?

June 29, 2010 - 1:28 am 6 Comments

I really want to become a lawyer. I have the grades, the LSAT score, but I am extremely afraid of speaking in public. I get too caught up in the moment and so nervous that I can’t think on my feet and argue effectively. I really want to become a lawyer, and there was a point in my life where I was actually good in public speaking. But years of emotional and verbal abuse resulted in me loosing confidence in myself, developing a stuttering problem, and just disliking the sound of my voice. Should I go to threapy? What steps can I take personally to realize my dream of being a great public speaker/lawyer?

Well, the only way I know of conquering your fear of public speaking would be to face it head on. Speak in public as often as you can, verbal skills are essential to litigators. Which coincidentally I want to be as well. Maybe joining some reader’s theatre groups, local theatre shows, or just trying to be more assertive around your friends could give you that confidence you need to achieve your goal. Best of luck, i’m pulling for you!

How do you deal with never speaking to someone who meant everything to you?

June 26, 2010 - 2:47 am 5 Comments

If you gave someone your everything, all your mental and emotional energy and an incident/disagreement/argument occurred which resulted in you never speaking to them again, how would you handle it? And could you really go the rest of your life without some contact with them?

I went through several steps to forget this guy that meant the world to me. He was stubborn and that’s why I never wanted to speak to him again. It was so hard, but now I’m totally fine. First I was in denial and tried to make things work. Then I was terribly terribly sad. Then I was terribly terribly angry. And then I said fuck it adn I ended up throwing away everything that reminded me of him and I deleted his number from my phone and deleted him on myspace and what have you. And then I met someone special who made me totally forget about him and now everything is fine.

We hadn’t spoken in years actually and then we caught up on myspace and I didn’t want to strangle him so I figure I am healed now. I just don’t have any of those feelings for him anymore. So I guess I didn’t go the rest of my life, but if this guy means so much to you then eventually you guys will reconcile whether you believe it now or not. I thought I would never talk to this guy again, but we talked a little and it wasn’t hostile. Good luck with it though, try not to get too down. Try to do what makes you happy without him in the picture. I wasted so much of my life being sad over this kid and I don’t think it’s worth it at all.

What would be a good spanish speaking country to study in for a semester?

June 22, 2010 - 10:44 am 3 Comments

I plan to study abroad in the spring of ‘09. I plan on going to one of the 21 spanish speaking countries in the world. The problem is I don’t know anything about the countries and which have really good study abroad programs. I want to take classes that go towards my degree because I don’t want to get behind on my studies. But, while I’m there I want to take a spanish course or two. Could anyone give me any information?

You need to decide if you want to go to a country with a more "Latin" version of Spanish or a more European version of Spanish. I know that the dialects are very different and that you are often taught the version used in Spain in high school and college.

If you are looking at using your Spanish in countries such as Mexico, Peru, Costa Rica… then I would head to either South or Central America.

If you are looking at using your Spanish in Spain then I would look into programs there. It would also be easier to travel to other cultures if you were to go to Spain. I am not sure if you want to travel while studying abroad or if you want to remain in one place (or one country).

This doesn’t have a lot to do with your question but when I studied abroad I went to Spain twice and loved it. Barcelona is one of my favorite places.

I would pick a program that you are inters ted in and that you can get credit for and see where they offer the programs. Many of the larger study abroad companies offer programs in numerous countries. Just make sure that it is a track you want to take (it doesn’t make sense to take ecology in the rain forest if you are majoring in business unless this can count for your gen. ed).

What’s the difference between speaking and written English?

June 19, 2010 - 5:32 am 4 Comments

I’m studying English now. One thing confusing me is that I find speaking English is more informal than written one, and more simple sentences than complicated ones? Is that the case?

Yes, that is the case (though I am certain this applies to most any language).

English speakers are usually profoundly informal in verbal communications. Use of slang and the shortening of words is common practice. I suspect it is because most people like to speak quickly, and as a means of emotional bonding, rather than informational gain where precise speech would be further necessary. Honestly, even as a native English speaker, informal speech patterns confuse me as well. It is something that you will simply be better off learning through firsthand observations, not through any study program.

What country offers excellent English speaking level and the most cost-effective staff?

What country offers excellent English speaking level and the most cost-effective staff?

I am looking to set up a call centre abroad but am unsure which country would offer the highest quality level of English speaking staff as well as cost-effectiveness.

Thank you in advance.

It depends what country you are currently in? If you are in India etc then I would say the best country to set up your call centre is the UK but I presume you are in the UK and want somewhere with cheaper labour, if so the banks use cheap labour in the Philippines but the British worker can be trained better in product knowledge and already speak fluent English, there is nothing worse than the foreign call centres phoning you when they do not understand what you say, especially the Scottish accents and they only know 4 sentences – What is your name, your date of birth, your postcode and when are you paying? – Give the UK worker a chance.

How much is the speaking section of the Spanish Regents worth?

June 8, 2010 - 12:56 pm 1 Comment

If i do really bad on it, how will it affect my overall score?
The speaking section is the one that i am most concerned with, because it’s my weakness.

I’m looking forward to the writing sections and think that i will be able to to pretty well on them.

The oral part of the exam is worth 24 points out of 100. You get two conversations (that need to be about 8 sentences each), and both are worth 12 points. The topics are semi-random, you choose a number between 1 and 60 and that corresponds with the given topics.
