How long does it take to speak normally after a distal jet device is installed?

June 29, 2010 - 1:28 am 1 Comment

I had a distal jet appliance installed and need to wear for 6-9 months. I’m finding it extremely difficult to speak. The orthodontist said it only takes a few days to get used to it but that seems overly optimistic. I need to be able to communicate very clearly in my job so I’m wondering how long this will realistically take.

I haven’t heard that particular term but I’m assuming you’re referring to headgear. My daughter would have had to wear this device during her orthodontic treatment for an open bite but she avoided it by choosing to have two of her upper teeth extracted instead. That’s because some of her friends had to wear headgear and she thought it looked dorky. She also said that all of them had problems with speaking clearly and she didn’t want that to happen with her. I really can’t say if you’ll be able to adjust or you’ll continue to have problems. I guess it depends on the individual person.

How to train a dog to speak on command?

June 26, 2010 - 2:47 am 4 Comments

I’m having trouble maintaining control. When i give him the command to speak he begins to bark nonstop and begins to get a little aggressive. He is a 9week old German Shepherd puppy.

Teach him "quiet". To do this when he is barking say "quiet’ and when he is quiet – just for a second or two – quickly give him a treat. Keep doing it until gradually he will stop barking food good on command.

I doubt your 9 week old puppy is seriously being ‘aggressive’ unless he has a neurological disorder. He is probably being excited by you telling him to bark and going overboard, nipping and growling, jumping around. Maybe you should wait until he is a few months old to do trick training, when his attention span is longer.

How do I overcome my shyness when I speak in front of my classes?

June 22, 2010 - 10:44 am 2 Comments

Actually I’m always shy. When I ge in front of the class my face turns bright red and when I speak it’s always quiet and I have to talk louder which is even more of an embarrassment to me.
I want to learn how to speak in front of a class and people in general without getting nervous.
And I want to learn how to be social. It would come in handy since I’m a Freshman this year in High School.

Please Please help!
Anything will work!

Thanks in advance.

Nerves are good sign it shows how important this project is to you. Not everyone is nervous but you care about it so that’s a good thing.

To dampen the nerves down you need to focus on people but not look at them look just above there head, so to them you could be looking at them but your not. Then just speak clearly, and talk loud, if people start going "Eh, I can hear her" it will put you off.
Smile, and most of all just relax, with deeper breathing, talk at your normal pace, and hold something like a pen or pencil in your hand to avoid fiddling.

Watch the other people and focus on what you consider to be their good and bad points and go from there.

What language does air traffic controllers and pilots speak?

June 19, 2010 - 5:32 am 4 Comments

Scenario: Flight from Minneapolis, Minnesota to Seoul, S. Korea.
Does both the pilot and the air traffic controllers speak English?
If they don’t speak/understand a language, you could have a major communication breakdown!

Most people would think only and strictly English is spoken during air traffic communication, that’s totally correct, but only for the English speaking countries. It’s true that ALL the controllers and pilots in the world HAVE TO know English, but that doesn’t mean pilots cannot speak other languages to the controllers in other countries. I know that in China, the Chinese pilots actually talk to the controllers in Chinese most of the time, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that, as long as they understand each other fast and clear. Same thing in Japan, I’ve heard pilots talking to Ground or Ramp controls in Japanese. If you can speak what the controller speaks, it’s not really neccessary to speak English. But I think they only speak their own languages for the things that are not too important or the things that they want to say fast and short. Or when there’s not many international planes around the area on the same frequency, then you probably wouldn’t even hear a word of English, haha.

What country in Scandinavia speaks the most english, and how much english do they speak?

June 16, 2010 - 1:31 pm 3 Comments

I’m an american and plan on moving to live somewhere in Scandinavia when I get out of college. I do plan on learning dutch but I would like to know which country speaks the most English and also how much English they speak.

All the Scandinavian countries have a very high percentage of English speakers.. official statistics are around 90%. English is a required subject in school from age 7-8 and all media is subtitled (not dubbed as in some countries) so there’s a lot of exposure. Almost everyone speaks decent English, except young kids, some older people (60+) and some immigrants. Most people are fluent, there’s not much difference between the countries.

That said, Dutch won’t help you much in Scandinavia. And if you want to get a job here (with a few exceptions) or integrate socially, learning a Scandinavian language is a necessity.

What indigenous language do migrant workers from Oaxaca speak?

June 8, 2010 - 12:56 pm 4 Comments

Please read — I know they speak Spanish so that is not the answer I am looking for! I am going to be working with migrant workers this summer, and I have heard that many of them are from Oaxaca and speak an indigenous language. Does anyone know what languages might be prevalent?

They might speak mostly Mixtec because Mixtec is the main local language in Oaxaca and Mixtecs have been among the 1st indigenous groups to migrate to Northern Mexico and US (since the 70es).
But you have now also Zapotec and other group, as mentioned by Gato. But relatively few Nahuatl speakers, unlike other states like Guerrero.
