Where do I start when learning Japanese?

June 29, 2010 - 1:28 am 6 Comments

I am a beginner at the Japanese language. I’ve tried several online websites to help me learn, and have bought a book or two, but so far I have gotten nowhere. Is there an understandable method to learning the language at a reasonable speed? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

You start in a classroom.
You cannot learn any other way, as is clearly evident.
If there are no classes near you then just wait until the chance arises. Trying to learn by yourself does not work. You need a teacher. You can’t study by yourself because you have no way of knowing if you’re doing something right or wrong.

How should I go about learning to play acoustic pop-punk stuff?

June 26, 2010 - 2:47 am 1 Comment

I have an acoustic. I need some help reading tabs. I think barre chords would be easier for me to learn than regular chords, so can you suggest some bands that might be easier for me to try out first? If I think a song might sound easy to play, should I just look up the tab and give it a try, or what? Any sites, pages, or vids that may be helpful in my learning process?

go to youtube and type in guitar lessons for whatever song yu want to learn

How do I increase active learning time during the school day?

June 22, 2010 - 10:44 am 1 Comment

I have just begun teaching in school where the students are troubled and I need to work on maximizing actual learning time.

What methods and preparation do you use and have proven effective to increase the amount of time students are actually engaged in learning activities?

Any suggestions will help so that I can evaluate them and apply them to my classroom. Thank you.

The best way to ensure that there is active learning going on is to make sure you include at least one activity during each lesson where you aren’t standing in the front and talking and the students are working. This includes having the students answering worksheets, working on projects, researching something on the internet, explaining a concept they learned to each other etc. Basically, after you teach a concept, give the students an activity that forces them to actually use what you taught them. This allows students to practice the knowledge and for you to see if they understood it or not. Ask yourself – what can I have the students do that would force them to actually use the knowledge I taught them?

If you want more specifics, you will have to specify what age group you’re teaching and what subject, since certain activities only work well for certain grades and subjects.

What are good books for learning graphic arts?

June 19, 2010 - 5:33 am 2 Comments

I was interested in using my creativity and possibly learning graphic arts concentrated on web developing. What are some good books to learn about graphic arts, art, and web design?

Meggs, History of Graphic Design
Landa, Graphic Design Solutions, also Advertising by Design
Carter, Day and Meggs, Typographic Design
Clair, Busic-Snyder, A Typographic Workbook
Samara, Making and Breaking the Grid

Those books will all give you a good grounding in graphic design, typography and the history of Graphic design. These are the foundations for being a graphic designer.

The software is secondary; once you’ve studied design concepts, then progress to the software, and web design. If you are going to learn web design, although you can use software that handles the code for you, it’s a good idea to get at least a basic grounding in HTML, XHTML and CSS.

When first learning the piano is it okay to use a keyboard instead of an 88 key piano?

June 16, 2010 - 1:31 pm 8 Comments

I really want to start learning how to play the piano. I already have a keyboard with 61 keys, i don’t know if i should buy a full sized piano, or even if it will make a difference…HELP!

1 It is OK for you to use a keyboard

2 make sure you have a proper keyboard stand. BUT key board stands tend to be higher then a normal piano. so please, PLEASE make sure when your sitting the keyboard 1-3 inches above your knee. THAT IS IMPORTANT keyboards are normally higher than a normal piano so you have to reach UP and when that happens your wrist gets tired and flops down making it impossible in the future to have good and position to play octaves trills and many other techniques. If you notice when your at a real piano the piano keyboard is a little above or at the same height as your waist. so your elbows should form a 85 degree angle. THIS IS IMPORTANT SO YOU GET USED TO A PIANO

3 the keyboard should have touch sense ( touch sense ~ when you hit the key hard the sound is loud when you it the key light the sound will come out light)

Learning English – Lesson Two (Hello/Goodbye)

June 11, 2010 - 12:00 pm 25 Comments

In this lesson we look at the many ways to say hello and goodbye. This is the new version of Lesson 2.

Thank you to the many people who have said that ‘Howdy’ is not used as a formal greeting any more. But it can be used as an informal one, as a way of greeting a person in a fun way. As I found out for myself !

In what ways has learning about world religions influenced the way you think about religion?

June 8, 2010 - 12:56 pm 12 Comments

In what ways has learning about world religions influenced the way you think about religion? Why is it important to learn about other peoples’ beliefs and attitudes? How will you utilize this information in the future?

I just think it’s important to learn about as much as possible in order to broaden your mind, studying other religions hasn’t really affected my beliefs though. I am a Catholic, but I am and always have been aware that there is a definite possibility that I could be wrong.
