I’m thinking of learning to speak Mandarin, but from a business perspective I’ve herad business people in China usually know English. I’m just not sure of the justification for spending so much time to learn a lanugage when in reality you probably won’t be fluent anyway. I know President Obama and a lot of major businessmen don’t speak anything other than English.

Learning a language is a good mental exercice. It teaches you humility (something Americans are often short of). But most of all, it opens your mind to another world.

I teach one on one and hence are able to change my teaching ideas to suit student learning styles more freely then clasroom teachers! How do I tell which learning styles suit individual students?

Practice multiple learning styles with them. Use every method you can think of, then determine which works best for each student. Asking the student is silly because nobody really knows until they try each technique.

*edit* Lisa, there are far more than 4 learning styles. Visual, Auditory, Hands on/Project based, Rote skills and numerous others can be added to your list. When trying to find the best skills for each learner to use, it’s important not to think of the number of ways tried but to continue searching until the BEST method for THAT STUDENT has been found no matter how many methods have been tried.

I’ve been learning Mandarin for about a year now and am plugging my way through TUTTLE’s very helpful "Learning Chinese Characters – HSK Level A". I have however, not been paying much attention to the traditional characters. I would like to eventually learn the traditional characters (especially if I ever want to go to Hong Kong). Would it be easiest to learn these as I learn the simplified ones? If I already know the simplified character, how hard is it to learn the traditional one.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Because traditional chinese characters are difficulｔ for Chinese, the government make simplified one and make the chinese people use simplified one.Neither do the Americans.I don’t think you have to remember traditional ones.

So, I’m learning the basics of the language right now and I’ve been wondering what the benefits would be. I’m planning on breaking into the game industry in a few years. I’m also looking for a good or better program on learning japanese.

It looks good on a resume. Also if you plan on working with Japanese gaming companies, that Japanese knowledge is going to help. I have a friend who is studying Japanese with me who is into music composing (for games etc) and he is learning it to go to Japan and I’m sure he wants to some day work for the the gaming industry’s top Japanese companies. If you want to do that too, learning the language is surely going to help you some day.

It’s also good if you have a natural liking of the language, or enjoy watching anime and reading manga. Translating can also be a fun pass time.

In summary, you should go for it. Seek a classroom learning environment (tafe course etc). It’s way better than any program can teach and a lot more fun. Japanese is a very nice language, I love it alot.
