is it true that learning french helps smooth out accents?

July 14, 2010 - 7:54 am 5 Comments

I want to smooth out my southern accent a bit and someone said learning french does that.

Learning any language can help you smooth an accent if you work on it. Singing lessons will help, as well. Basically, the idea is that you’re learning pure, unadulterated (un-accented) sounds that make up words, whether those words are English or another language. It takes effort, and/or a skilled teacher. A speech therapist could help you, as well, more accurately.

I am learning to speak French. How can I learn French body language & the less text books elements of French?

July 11, 2010 - 9:39 am 10 Comments

Communicating in French wth French people has many facets beyond the words and grammar. How can I go about learning these facets of French?

You are so right! If there is an Alliance Francais near you, you can join other french speaking people for social interaction, and that will help you. And by all means visit your video store and see if there are any french movies you can rent. It may be difficult to find something that doesn’t have english sub-titles, but regardless of that, you can still learn a great deal by watching the actors in the movie. Make sure it is made in France, and ignore the subtitles, if you can. (Some of them have Asian subtitles, and that’s great because you have to listen to the french sound track and can’t guess at the meaning.)
Other than that, watch your newspaper and every time there is a french artist in town, a french concert, a french dignitary, try to get invited to the event.
Of course, the best thing of all is to treat yourself to a holiday in France once you have mastered the basics. You could call it advanced homework!!
Bonne chance.

Whats the quickest way of learning french without getting tutoring?

Whats the fastest way of learning french without getting a french tutor or taking french classes??

You can borrow those ‘rossetta stone’ language courses from the library, and you could probably also buy the french course books they use in schools:: these are designed to be used without any tapes ect, and you can start from the youngest age and work up. Also…maybe listen to french radio or have french films on in the background so your brain starts to ‘think’ in french.
Total immersion is the quickest way: So maybe study it intensively to get the basics and then go on holiday to a french speaking place to shock your brain into really concentrating!
Bonne chance! (haha..no, i dont speak french, so thats probably wrong!)

I need help learning french to help my son in french immersion?

July 5, 2010 - 9:43 pm 2 Comments

Does anyone know of any free online courses to learn french, my son is in Grade 1 french immersion and we’d like to be able to help him out.

Most french immersion schools have a parents group that will help uni lingual parents to learn enough french to help through the first 3 years of FI. Inquire at your sons school. Get yourself a french\english dictionary and a Besherelle. Take a night course offered at a local college or community. And don’t worry, my class was one of the first full french immersed classes to graduate in Canada and my parents only spoke russian and english and I got through it fine.

From a scale of 0 to 10, how important and major is it learning French?

July 3, 2010 - 1:58 am 10 Comments

Is French an important and major language language to learn? Please answer question and rate. No negative numbers!

It totally depends on what you make of it. For me, it’s a flat 0. But I have no desire to go France/Quebec/that part of Africa.
But, if you do, then obviously it’s more important.
Canadian products will be in English and French (as will all North American products).
But the point is, it’s only as important as you make it. French is still used as a diplomatic language most international language organizations (the UN, EU, AU, etc), it’s in the top 10 of most spoken languages in the world, and of course the francophone culture may interest you or whatnot.
Depending on your point of view, it could be a 0 and it could be a 10.

what are good study tips for learning french?

June 30, 2010 - 5:46 am 5 Comments

its my first year learning french and finals are comming up and its hard for me to grasp the conjugations and what the verbs mean.

Make flashcards!! I’m learning Italian and that’s what I do.
I know you don’t have much time but over the summer you could review if you’re interested: The Ultimate French Review and Practice. Your library or local Barnes and Nobles has it, I’m sure. It is an excellent book.
