I live near a big Chassidic/Hasidic Jewish community in New York and they always speak Yiddish. I’m interested in learning about their teachings and maybe becoming Hasidic. But how can I learn how to speak Yiddish to communicate like they do together? What is the best way to learn to speak it? I’m a secular Jew interested in becoming more religious.

one way is to take classes at a college or through something like the 92nd street Y, or through a private tutor. the other way is immersion. live amongst them and pick it up as you go along. i think that learning yiddish, though, is separate from any interest in increasing religious observance.

How can I learn to speak Chinese Mandarin? I can learn by listening to a CD and repeating it, but how can I make it more effective. I only know English, and Spanish fluently and I would like to learn Chinese Mandarin.

I’m assuming you don’t know any Mandarin Chinese at all; so i suggest Instant Immersion language learners. I’ve been using it for Spanish help and it’s really good! The entire thing of lessons 1,2, and 3 only cost about $40.00 and it has a part made for just practicing speaking as well as getting to know the language. Hope this helps!

I heard that actors have a method for learning to speak lines in foreign languages "phonetically." How does this work? How long does it take to learn to do this (or how much effort is involved?) And don’t they need an accent coach, also?

Phonetically simply means sounding it out. If you know what the italian language sounds like (maybe from watching gangster movies lol) if you see an italian word, even if you have no idea what it means, you know immidiatly how it should sound. Does that make sense? A dialog coach is there for you if you are having trouble picking up an accent. Very rarely as an actor do you do things in other languages though. You might have a character that is German, speaks with a german accent, and curses in german, but the rest of the lines are in English. Reading the lines phonetically (sounding them out), and speaking with the German accent that you picked up from watching Indian Jones and the Last Crusade too many times is how most actors do this.
