How long does it take to learn the german language?

June 29, 2010 - 1:28 am 8 Comments

I am 15 years old and I speak english. I lived in USA all my life. I want to learn german but what ways are there and what is the average length of time to learn it? What if I go on a game that only has german words will I adapt to it?

Depending on exposure, effort/motivation, and aptitude, most people can learn to speak German within 6 to 9 months, but we are talking relatively basic here. German grammar and syntax are quite hard for some people to get their mind around, and differ quite considerably between spoken and written German. In my experience only a prolonged stay in an environment of native speakers and extensive reading makes you really proficient.

Every language learner needs to develop two different aspects:
1. receptive, i.e understanding in speech and writing, and
2. productive, i.e. writing and speaking in the foreign language.

Both of them are only learned by doing, the second being the more difficult and more important one. Contrary to common belief, translating from your native language into the second one is not really needed. It is helpful for some people, though. Likewise, a game might help you to get into it, but there really is no other way than to write in German yourself. Speaking comes later – in a conversation the topic might have changed, or a painfullly long silence developed, by the time you find the words to answer.

Here’s a free site to meet loads of Germans improving their English, who will help with your German in return: http://www.livemocha.com/
Careful with their German course though – it’s not very good, but people will set you right about mistakes. One of the best courses is the BBC one: http://freelanguage.org/learn-german/bbc-languages-german
Here’s a site for the grammar:http://class.georgiasouthern.edu/german/grammar/grammar.htm

There are many more sites about, just google "learning German"

Can you recommend to me good websites to learn German?

let me know what you think!
when i had the idea of people submitting words, at first i was thinking i was just gonna do one video, pronouncing a whole lot of words in a short time. but once i started thinking about pronunciation problems in general, i felt it may be a lot clearer if i explained a bit more about the words?
would you agree or prefer a short video with just WORD after WORD?
hope you’re all good,
xx

How difficult is it to learn German?

June 16, 2010 - 1:31 pm 5 Comments

My first language is english, and I have been speaking french for almost four years now, but I have recently decided it is time to learn another language.

Next year, if all goes well, I am hoping to exchange to Germany for my second year of high school. The problem is that I only have about eight months to learn the language, I barely know any German but I seem to learn quite fast so do you think it is possible?

Should I buy a computer program or take classes? What do you think would be the best way to learn?

German is the easiest langauge to learn if you speak English, and visa versa, if you were able to learn French german will be easier. Since you have learned French you know about masculin and feminine word that will be of some help to you. Remember in german all words are pronounced as as writen there is no silent letters everything you see you say vowels are most all times not spoken hard like English and there are many simalarities in words much of English has come from german. In 8 months if you really try hard and are good at picking up on other langauges you should learn alot. Gute nacht und habe eine glucklisch 8 monate in schule. Oh ya when you see a letter that looks like a Capitol B that doest connect at the bottom it’s really just a short form for a double ss ich bin gut= iam good, ich bin= I am, tip ich bin heiss should mean I am hot, but it translate to in german I am horny LOL ich bin warm= iam gay LOL simple mistake learning I did it was embarassing when found out what I was saying LOL good luck.

What’s the best thing to use to learn German?

June 8, 2010 - 12:56 pm 5 Comments

I need to learn German, but there’s so many CDs, books, websites and whatnot to choose from I don’t know which one to use. I don’t really care if you have to buy it (Though free is always better), I just need to be able to hold a conversation in German, learn the basic everyday things and the like.
Any suggestions on what to use?
