What are some really good sites for me to learn german?

I would really like to learn german and I’ve been teaching myself for a while now.
I’m already signed up for livemocha and I’m currently saving up for Rosetta Stone, but in the meantime what are some other sites for me to visit to help me along the way?

Story Behind Song: Many of many firsts for me. My first to write a song in German (1hr). My first to sing a song in German. My first to have Kaiser sit for as long as 5 mins XD (that’s why you see me singing to him, a way of me saying “stay, sit” while singing). Searching youtube to better my Deutsch, I found out there weren’t any Learn German through songs, so I decided to write one=) Germany has been great to me. Beautiful Country, rich in history and kind people. This is my way of paying it forward of having the world learn a little more Deutsch through song. I just hope the Native Deutsch speakers are forgiving=) Danke Schon to my German friends Arnold and Dagmar who have helped me with the translations and with my attempted pronunciation! tc, JC.

sitting my with my Dad( a few days ago) I suddenly found my self able to communicate with a few questions in German! why am I posting this now…I have been a fan for a while. My daughter & our dog LOVE your videos too! My daughter was able to ask her Opa how he was in German! 4 years of high school did not teach me the accent & the ability to remember as much as your little tune! Anybody know any fast ways to learn German easily, and remember it?

I really want to learn German and I am also learning French right now so I wont be able to take classes or anything but I am dedicated to learning it.

What I really need, is something 100% free and easy that will let me learn German and also to be able to remember it. You know, through pictures and stuff like that. Websites would work great since that is what I’m mostly aiming at.

Speaking or writing in German?

There are many good books for learning German (Everything German book, etc). However, German grammar can get rather confusing. If you’re like me, the books’ explanations on grammar probably aren’t enough.

If you’re looking to actually speak German, I would look for something like Rosetta Stone or an actual German class. Pronunciation isn’t too beastly, but trying to teach yourself how to read/write/speak german is enough. I’ve been taking German in high school, and the pronunciation comes naturally after awhile. But when you’re teaching yourself, it’s rather forced.

i am moving to germany for 10 months as a foreign exchange student. is this enough time to learn german fluently? i know very little german and i will be going to a gymnasium and i will be 15.

As said in the other same question… If you take intensive courses, you might able to communicate basic things within 3 monthes, and maybe speak fluent german at the end of the year. Be prepared to talk as much as possilbe and tell people to stop talking englisch with you and you will succeed (trust me everyone will talk english to you otherwhise)

I am going to Germany in 3 Month and I wanted to learn some basic German. Any Ideas where i can learn it fast?

There are a lot of cool different Programs that you can download out there. Rosetta Stone and Rocket Language are the best ones in my opinion. They are not like those boring mp3 courses. They are fun and they actually work. Rocket Language is a lot cheaper then rosetta stone but its just as good. Here I give you the link

How hard will it be for me to learn german if I know english & swedish?

I’m going to be doing a lot of traveling in north western europe when I grow up, maybe even live there since that’s where my family is from. So, I want to learn a lot of germanic languages. I’m going to take german 1 this year, & if I learn german I’ll move onto dutch, since I heard that’s the closest to german. Thanks.

Since English, Swedish, and German are all Germanic languages you shouldn’t have too much difficulty[mostly with vocab] but remember learning a new language is never completely easy so there will be some challenges.

In the grand scheme of things, how hard is it to learn German? I am fluent in English and have studied 3 1/2 years of French and am wanting to take up a new language. How hard is German to learn? Is it hard to learn German when you are used to a romance language such as French? OR is German a bit easier since it is a teutonic language like English? Thanks in advance!

If you knew Latin it would be much easier to learn the German language.
But even if you knew Latin German is much harder to learn.
The adjective shows three declination-schemes depending on which accompanying word you have to choose (definite article, indefinite article or no article).
P. ex.
the great man
der groß-e Mann

a great man
ein groß-er Mann

great man
groß-er Mann

You have to differentiate and learn four cases:
Nom.: der Mann
Gen.: des Mann-es
Dat.: dem Mann
Akk.: den Mann

Linked with the definite article and an adjective you got:
Nom.: der groß-e Mann
Gen.: des groß-en Mann-es
Dat.: dem groß-en Mann
Akk.: den groß-en Mann

If you have to use the indefinite article you got:
Nom: ein groß-er Mann
Gen.: ein-es groß-en Mann-es
Dat.: ein-em groß-en Mann
Akk.: ein-en groß-en Mann

Without any article you got the same forms without the indefinite article:
Nom: groß-er Mann
Gen.: groß-en Mann-es
Dat.: groß-em Mann
Akk.: groß-en Mann

This is the masculine gender; in German you have also the feminine and the neuter gender:
the man – the woman – the child
der Mann – die Frau – das Kind

Okay, masculine and neuter gender are declinated similarily, except of the Akk. neutr. which is formally identical with the Nominative (as in Latin).

This is much harder than in French where no declination is found.
Somewhat likened these both languages are in their conjugation of the verbs – this conjugation shows a multifarious picture of forms and irregular verbs.
Take the personal endings of a regular verb in present time:
fragen (to ask)
ich frag-e
du frag-st
er/sie/es frag-t
wir frag-en
ihr frag-t
sie frag-en

German is my maternal language and I estimate it – but as we natural speakers of German say:
"Deutsche Sprach’, schwere Sprach’." That means:
"German language is a hard language."
But hey, we love it – otherwise there wouldn’t so much stuff to discuss and argue.
