With the Hispanic population growing, is there a chance that English will not be the primary language?

June 29, 2010 - 1:28 am 12 Comments

Well with Hispanics becoming a majority in this country, I don’t see why we can’t have two recognized languages.

Switzerland, which happens to be one of the most educated countries in the world and a true democracy, has 3 official languages. German, French and Italian, the reason is they share borders with those countries and recognize them as majorities in their country.

It would do all of us some good, to know two languages.

Is Spanish spoken by more people "as a first language" than English?

June 26, 2010 - 2:47 am 3 Comments

English is the official language of more than 40 countries. It is the dominant language of business and technology. However, in most countries where English is the official language, almost no one speaks it as a first language. The only countries where most people speak English as a first language are: the USA, UK, 75% of Canada, Australia, New Zealand and some other caribbean countries.

Spanish is the official language of 21 countries but almost every one who lives in these 21 countries speaks it as a first language. Morever, 15% of the population of the US speaks Spanish as a first language.

So, Which language has more native speakers?

Yes, Spanish as a first language has more speakers than English.

Native speakers of Spanish: 322,300,000
Native speakers of English: 309,350,000

Part 2 – 5: Panel Discussion Sri Lanka War – Press TV

June 19, 2010 - 6:58 pm 25 Comments

PART (1, 2, 3, 4, 5): Witness How A Civilized Society Justify Terrorism: If civilized societies such as EU, (UK), USA, Norway, Canada Australia, protect & feed and defend terrorists of another country, you cant blame innocent civilians being killed on the battle field. Before you turn on to others to blame, criticize your own policies on conflicts first and do not repeat same mistakes from one conflict to another.

If Taliban had been eliminated by Russia, Afghanistan could have been peaceful today. If Sadam was removed for his dictatorship then you should be also able to see LTTE dictatorship in the same perspective. LTTE killed Sri Lankans who disobeyed, used civilians as human shields, used biggest child soldiers brigade in the world, suicide bombers… etc.

Civilized societies have not so far recognized Sri Lanka war is a separatists’ terrorism. Most defend LTTE terrorists. Cilvil societies have an obligation to protect a civil society from a terrorist group before its too late. Do not defend terrorists. Do not support Terrorists. Beware of Donations, Your Hard Earned Money May Use to Kill Many Thousands Civilians in Sri Lanka.

SRI LANKA WAR MY PERSPECTIVE

I salute Lt. Gen. Fonseka, Commander of Sri Lanka Army for being honest and using correct words which became a controversial issue on the discussion (Part-2) .

I understand clearly what made him to say Sri Lanka belongs to Sinhalese(which now multi ethnic). Sinhalese were massacred by the most ruthless separatist terrorists LTTE for the last 26 years and General Fonseka was one of survivor of a more than 200 sucide attacks of LTTE against Sinahalese & Muslims.

General is absolutely right. He has a right to say Sri Lanka belongs to Sinhalese and LTTE must be totally annihilated from Sri Lanka. Follow Majoritys as other countries.

Sinhala Only Act (1956) has been justified by S.W.R.D.B. why Sinhala as majoritys (70%-Sinhala) language should be the state language of Sri Lanka. Besides Sinhalese, Malay, Burgher, majority Muslims and Tamils do speak Sinhala since they live among Sinhala majority.

EUROPEANS & TAMIL SEPARATISM:

Why Europeans accuse Sinhalese and claim Sri Lanka has an Ethnic problem?
Why Europeans support Elam cause?
Are Tamil’s allegations of (language) discrimination true?
Is Sri Lanka war an Ethnic problem or a Separatists Terrorists problem?

European’s Colonial Apartheid Discrimination

When Europeans invaded South Africa, they started discriminating majority Black Africans. Black Africans were treated as second class citizens. White Europeans ruled the country. They separated Whites from Blacks. For example; they reserved front seats of the bus for whites and rear seats for blacks, Swimming pools used by Whites, blacks were not allowed Etc. Europeans discriminated black Africans. During Black Africans freedom struggle; Anti-Apartheid law Europeans had to give equal rights to Black Africans. Europeans discrimination declined after Anti-Apartheid law.

Tamil Separatists’ Hypocrisy

When Sri Lanka was under English invaders (1796-1948), Tamils didnt mind (Separatist representative, Mr Surendrens claim in the Sri Lanka War Discussion, Press TV-Part-1,2,3) having English as the state language (English less than 1% of total population in Sri Lanka).

Surprisingly, after independence in 1948, when Sinhala became (1956) the state language (Majority Sinhalese 70% of total population) they claimed Sinhalese people discriminated Tamil people.

The question arise here is why Tamils didnt (dont) claim they felt discriminated when another minority English people made English language as the state language of Sri Lanka for over a century?

EUROPEANS PERSPECTIVE ON SRI LANKA WAR

Either Europeans see Sri Lanka War through ANTI-APARTHEID perspective and support Tamils to solve so called discrimination by Sinhalese, therefore a separate sate (Two states option) or Europeans see Sri Lanka war through APARTHEID perspective and encourage Tamils to be separated from Sinhalese like they did in South Africa separating Blacks from Whites.

Europeans cant claim Sri Lanka war as an Ethnic a problem and support Eelam since Tamils cant claim Sinhalese discriminated Tamils since Sinhala is majoritys language(90% of population speak Sinhalese including Tamils, Muslims since they live among Sinhalese). Infact Sinhalese fair enough, EU wants to justify separate terrorism through apartheid perspective! Defeat terrorism.
Absolutely, NO Eelam in Sri Lanka!

My Punjab is Great

June 15, 2010 - 9:52 am 25 Comments

Punjab Pakistan
The population of the province is estimated to be 86,084,000 in 2005 and is home to over half the population of Pakistan. The major language spoken in the Punjab is Punjabi (which is written in a Perso-Arabic script in Pakistan) and Punjabis comprise the largest ethnic group. The language is not given any official recognition in the Constitution of Pakistan. Punjabis themselves are a heterogeneous group comprising different tribes and communities, although the different castes in Pakistani Punjab has more to do with traditional occupations such as blacksmiths or artisans as opposed to rigid social stratifications.

The most important tribes within Punjab include the Muslim Rajputs, the Gakhars, the Gujjars, the Jats (see also List of Jat Clans of West Punjab), the Dogar, the Arain, the Punjabi Shaikhs and the Syeds. Other smaller tribes are the Awans, Rawns, Pukhtuns, Baloch, Afghans and the Maliks. Other smaller ethnic groups in the province include the Siraiki, Hindko, Kashmiris, Sindhis, and Muhajirs. Three decades of bloodshed in neighbouring Afghanistan have brought a large number of Afghan refugees (Tajik, Pashtun, Hazara and Turkmen) to the province.

The population of Punjab (Pakistan) is over 99% Muslim with a Sunni majority and Shia minority. There are small non-Muslims groups of Zorastrians, Bahá’ís, Christians, Sikhs,Hindus and Ahmadiyya communitiy.

The dialects spoken in different regions of the land have a common vocabulary and a shared heritage. The shared heritage also extends to a common faith, Islam. The people of Punjab have also a shared spiritual experience, which has been disseminated by Tassawwaf and can be witnessed on the occasion of the remembrance-fairs held on the Urs of Sufi Saints.

Haitian’s Llife

June 11, 2010 - 12:00 pm 21 Comments

Identification. Haiti, a name that means “mountainous country,” is derived from the language of the Taino Indians who inhabited the island before European colonization. After independence in 1804, the name was adopted by the military generals, many of them former slaves, who expelled the French and took possession of the colony then known as Saint Domingue. In 2000, 95 percent of the population was of African descent, and the remaining 5 percent mulatto and white. Some wealthy citizens think of themselves as French, but most residents identify themselves as Haitian and there is a strong sense of nationalism.

Location and Geography. Haiti covers 10,714 square miles (27,750 square kilometers). It is located in the subtropics on the western third of Hispaniola, the second largest island in the Caribbean, which it shares with the Spanish-speaking Dominican Republic. The neighboring islands include Cuba, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico. Three-quarters of the terrain is mountainous; the highest peak is the Morne de Selle. The climate is mild, varying with altitude. The mountains are calcareous rather than volcanic and give way to widely varying microclimatic and soil conditions. A tectonic fault line runs through the country, causing occasional and sometimes devastating earthquakes. The island is also located within the Caribbean hurricane belt.

Demography. The population has grown steadily from 431,140 at independence in 1804 to the estimate of 6.9 million to 7.2 million in 2000. Haiti is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. Until the 1970s, over 80 percent of the population resided in rural areas, and today, over 60 percent continue to live in provincial villages, hamlets, and homesteads scattered across the rural landscape. The capital city is Port-au-Prince, which is five times larger than the next biggest city, Cape Haitian.

Over one million native-born Haitians live overseas; an additional fifty thousand leave the country every year, predominantly for the United States but also to Canada and France. Approximately 80 percent of permanent migrants come from the educated middle and upper classes, but very large numbers of lower-class Haitians temporarily migrate to the Dominican Republic and Nassau Bahamas to work at low-income jobs in the informal economy. An unknown number of lower-income migrants remain abroad.

Linguistic Affiliation. For most of the nation’s history the official language has been French. However, the language spoken by the vast majority of the people is kreyol, whose pronunciation and vocabulary are derived largely from French but whose syntax is similar to that of other creoles. With the adoption of a new constitution in 1987, kreyol was given official status as the primary official language. French was relegated to the status of a secondary official language but continues to prevail among the elite and in government, functioning as marker of social class and a barrier to the less educated and the poor. An estimated 5 to 10 percent of the population speaks fluent French, but in recent decades massive emigration to the United States and the availability of cable television from the United States have helped English replace French as the second language in many sectors of the population.

Symbolism. Residents attach tremendous importance to the expulsion of the French in 1804, an event that made Haiti the first independently black-ruled nation in the world and one of the most resented because of their action by the rest of the world, only the second country in the Western Hemisphere to achieve independence from imperial Europe. The most noted national symbols are the flag, Henri Christophe’s Citadel and the statue of the “unknown maroon” (Maroon inconnu), a bare-chested revolutionary.
