Why has the Italian language never taken ground in the Italian diaspora?

July 14, 2010 - 7:55 am 5 Comments

Why is it that in most Italian communities outside of Italy, the Italian language quickly dies out? What is the reason for this? Italians are so close-knit and we always so proud of being Italian. Even in USA you see all the proud Italians….but how did the language die out like that?

I find it very disappointing as well that in a country like Argentina where over half the population is Italian that the Italian language never gained any sort of importance.

All other diasporas speak their languages

Because italian people tend to blend fast in the country where they go plus as italian language is not very used abroad they tend to teach the local language to the childrend

Part 4 – 5: Panel Discussion Sri Lanka War – PressTV

July 12, 2010 - 10:58 pm 25 Comments

PART (1, 2, 3, 4, 5): PANEL DISCUSSION ON SRI LANKA WAR BY PRESS TV

Witness How A Civilized Society Justify Terrorism

Participants:

Lord. Naseby – Chairman Parliamentary group on Sri Lanka
Mr. Douglas Wicrmaratne -Chairman Sinhala Association
Mr. Surendran-British Tamil Forum Separatists Representative
Mr. Robert Evans- Member of European Union Parliament (UK)
Mr. Jeremy – Presenter Press TV

ILL POLICIES ON GLOBAL CONFLICTS

If civilized societies such as EU, (UK), USA, Norway, Canada Australia, protect & feed and defend terrorists of another country, you cant blame innocent civilians being killed on the battle field.

Before you turn on to others to blame, criticize your own policies on conflicts first and do not repeat same mistakes from one conflict to another.

If Taliban had been eliminated by Russia, Afghanistan could have been peaceful today. If Sadam was removed for his dictatorship then you should be also able to see LTTE dictatorship in the same perspective. LTTE killed Sri Lankans who disobeyed, used civilians as human shields, used biggest child soldiers brigade in the world, suicide bombers… etc.

Civilized societies have not so far recognized Sri Lanka war is a separatists’ terrorism. Most defend LTTE terrorists. Cilvil societies have an obligation to protect a civil society from a terrorist group before its too late. Do not defend terrorists. Do not support Terrorists. Beware of Donations, Your Hard Earned Money May Use to Kill Many Thousands Civilians in Sri Lanka.

SRI LANKA WAR MY PERSPECTIVE

I salute Lt. Gen. Fonseka, Commander of Sri Lanka Army for being honest and using correct words which became a controversial issue on the discussion (Part-2) .

I understand clearly what made him to say Sri Lanka belongs to Sinhalese(which now multi ethnic). Sinhalese were massacred by the most ruthless separatist terrorists LTTE for the last 26 years and General Fonseka was one of survivor of a more than 200 sucide attacks of LTTE against Sinahalese & Muslims.

General is absolutely right. He has a right to say Sri Lanka belongs to Sinhalese and LTTE must be totally annihilated from Sri Lanka. Follow Majoritys as other countries.

Sinhala Only Act (1956) has been justified by S.W.R.D.B. why Sinhala as majoritys (70%-Sinhala) language should be the state language of Sri Lanka. Besides Sinhalese, Malay, Burgher, majority Muslims and Tamils do speak Sinhala since they live among Sinhala majority.

EUROPEANS & TAMIL SEPARATISM:

Why Europeans accuse Sinhalese and claim Sri Lanka has an Ethnic problem?
Why Europeans support Elam cause?
Are Tamil’s allegations of (language) discrimination true?
Is Sri Lanka war an Ethnic problem or a Separatists Terrorists problem?

European’s Colonial Apartheid Discrimination

When Europeans invaded South Africa, they started discriminating majority Black Africans. Black Africans were treated as second class citizens. White Europeans ruled the country. They separated Whites from Blacks. For example; they reserved front seats of the bus for whites and rear seats for blacks, Swimming pools used by Whites, blacks were not allowed Etc. Europeans discriminated black Africans. During Black Africans freedom struggle; Anti-Apartheid law Europeans had to give equal rights to Black Africans. Europeans discrimination declined after Anti-Apartheid law.

Tamil Separatists’ Hypocrisy

When Sri Lanka was under English invaders (1796-1948), Tamils didnt mind (Separatist representative, Mr Surendrens claim in the Sri Lanka War Discussion, Press TV-Part-1,2,3) having English as the state language (English less than 1% of total population in Sri Lanka).

Surprisingly, after independence in 1948, when Sinhala became (1956) the state language (Majority Sinhalese 70% of total population) they claimed Sinhalese people discriminated Tamil people.

The question arise here is why Tamils didnt (dont) claim they felt discriminated when another minority English people made English language as the state language of Sri Lanka for over a century?

EUROPEANS PERSPECTIVE ON SRI LANKA WAR

Either Europeans see Sri Lanka War through ANTI-APARTHEID perspective and support Tamils to solve so called discrimination by Sinhalese, therefore a separate sate (Two states option) or Europeans see Sri Lanka war through APARTHEID perspective and encourage Tamils to be separated from Sinhalese like they did in South Africa separating Blacks from Whites.

Europeans cant claim Sri Lanka war as an Ethnic a problem and support Eelam since Tamils cant claim Sinhalese discriminated Tamils since Sinhala is majoritys language(90% of population speak Sinhalese including Tamils, Muslims since they live among Sinhalese). Infact Sinhalese fair enough, EU wants to justify separate terrorism through apartheid perspective! Defeat terrorism.
Absolutely, NO Eelam in Sri Lanka!

What is the most commonly spoken language in Europe?

July 11, 2010 - 9:39 am 2 Comments

Besides English of course. I’m thinking geographically, not the amount of population who speaks the language.

According with EU government statistics, German is the most spoken language (as first language) with 24% of populatio, followed by French 16% and English 16%. However, spoken as both mother tongue and foreign language English is the most spoken one with 47%, followed by German 32% and French 28%,

About what percentage of Ireland’s population speaks Gaelic as a native language? Also, Welsh in Wales?

July 8, 2010 - 12:11 pm 5 Comments

1.6 million said they spoke Irish (not gaelic btw) on the last census so roughly 38% of the republics population can speak the language but the percentage that speak it as a native language ahead of english would be much lower than that, probably no more than 1-2% i guess.

16.3% of the population of Wales can read, write and speak Welsh

Free Tibet

July 8, 2010 - 7:14 am 24 Comments

The oldest on Earth, after Aboriginal culture, is the 20 000 years old culture of Tibet. Through its religious practice, this fierce and bold people became a society of a highly developed conscience.
In their attitude towards matter and soul, Bon, Dzogchen and Buddhism represented a common basis. This effected in a humble, but sufficient in the existing conditions, financial success. The unoppressed growth of this exceptional enclave, situated in the heart of the Himalai Mountains, was brutally terminated by Chinese occupation and extermination of Tibetan monks. From our point of view, i.e. the world’s point of view, this means the beginning of a war of conscience.
We intend to overcome the paranoia of borders and any kind of violence.

“Protect man, protect human beings”
The Tibetan people, their culture and the teachings of Buddha can survive for the benefit of all feeling beings only with the help of Western people.
It would be good if the society could help the noble idea of the FREE TIBET action. Therefore, we plead all persons and institutions, that could help this action in a direct and way, for support.
After all, we can all feel, and therefore should care about the safety, hapiness and love of other people.

One out of every five people on earth can speak English.

It has been one of the official languages of the United Nations since its founding in 1945.

English also is the most widely spoken Germanic language.

English is the traditional language of 67.2% of the worlds population.
English is the primary language in Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Australia (Australian English), the Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Belize, the British Indian Ocean Territory, the British Virgin Islands, Canada (Canadian English), the Cayman Islands, Dominica, the Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Grenada, Guernsey, Guyana, Isle of Man, Jamaica (Jamaican English), Jersey, Montserrat, Nauru, New Zealand (New Zealand English), Ireland (Hiberno-English), Pitcairn Islands, Saint Helena, Saint Lucia, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, Trinidad and Tobago, the Turks and Caicos Islands, the United Kingdom (various forms of British English), the U.S. Virgin Islands the United States (various forms of American English), and Zimbabwe.

In many other countries, where English is not a first language, it is an official language.
English is the most widely learned and used foreign language, and as such, some linguists believe that it is no longer the exclusive cultural sign of ‘native English speakers’, but is rather a language that is absorbing aspects of cultures worldwide as it continues to grow.

Because English is so widely spoken, it has often been referred to as a "global language".

By international treaty, English is the official language for aircraft/airport and maritime communication, as well as being one of the official languages of both the European Union and the United Nations, and of most international athletic organizations, including the Olympic Committee. Books, magazines, and newspapers written in English are available in many countries around the world.

You are correct.I am now living in Hungary and just about everyone under the age of 30 speaks English. It would be more but when it was communist over here it was really not a popular thing to learn, the gov. frowned on it.I even see 2 year olds learning! Everyone has English dictionaries in their homes so that they can look up and learn new words. People love to hear my American accent. It is funny..
