What is a good and effective language learning program?

April 29, 2010 - 5:09 pm 3 Comments

I’m trying to learn Spanish, but have so far failed. I am looking for a language learning software that is easy to understand, is effective, teaches pronunciation, and teaches you how to read write. I’ve seen customer reviews for Rosseta Stone and Pimsleur and i’m not sure if those two would be good, or worth the money. I also understand that learning a language takes time and patience and not from just computer programs, but i’m desperate for an effective program. I do know some of the baisics but need a lot more practice and learning. Please help!

Depending on how much you might wish to spend, Rosetta Stone can be effective but can also cost over 1,000 dollars for some languages. To study German I found Instant Immersion to be a great and cheap alternative to Rosetta Stone. It is only about 80 dollars or less. So really it all depends on your budget, but I do suggest Instant Immersion, includes 6 discs and and iPod/mp3 learning disc too!!!

How much of the world’s population speak a european language as their mother tongue?

April 29, 2010 - 5:09 pm 3 Comments

Out Of:
A) 31%
B) 29%
C) 26%

If you take English, Spanish & Portuguese as an example, then you have " America, Canada, United kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa as English" and the vast majority of "South America, Puerto Rico and Cuba as Spanish & Portuguese, Spain & Portugal, and a good chunk of the american population who speak Spanish.
so I would guess that European is about 25% with Mandarin at 40% and Hindu at 28%. Fill in the remainder however you can.

Why do moderate feminists become radical when people speak against feminism?

April 29, 2010 - 5:09 pm 6 Comments

They hate it when people speak against feminism and say it’s only the radicals making feminism look bad. But when they’re asked why they don’t do anything to oppose radical feminists to make feminism look good, they just dismiss it with, "Oh, because radical feminists have the right to speak". Can anyone understand why these so-called moderate feminists still defend feminism when they know very well radical feminists have taken over and they’re the only voice that’s heard? What’s the point of defending feminism with so-called moderate feminists when moderate feminists can’t be bothered to oppose radical feminists?
Therefore, what’s the point of feminism?

Looksy here mistur,

us feministicals am as closes to purfections as is HOOMANly possible! Only teh evul menz am to be complaineded about as them am evul, EVVVVUL!

we am all knowing that feminismisticalness am a farce, a superiorousness movements like a bowel movements. but we am needing to keep it going in order to demonize teh evul menz and elevates teh superiorous (but equal) womyn aboved teh evul menz and parasites.

Is it realistically possible to learn to play the violin well at age 40 with no previous musical experience?

April 29, 2010 - 5:09 pm 23 Comments

I’ve always loved the sound of the violin and have been curious about learning to play it, especially in the style you hear in Irish music. That looks very difficult. So just wondering I guess if a relatively old dog could learn new tricks or if this is one of those things you have to learn in your fomative years.
Any example of people who have learned to play only later in life would be inspirational!

Yes, very possible, go for it. I learned to play the piano at a very young age and just recently (last year) was playing for some residents at the nursing home and my coworker was amazed, she is a 52 year old RN, she started taking lessons a few months later and she is doing quite well.

What is the best way to learn & speak english?

how much time should be taken by person ,normally?
please write the some books name & on line site which help to learn,i am indian

I gave this answer to an almost identical question before:

Ideally, you want to chat as much as possible with other, fluent, speakers of English.

Barring that, listening to podcasts (the BBC have some great ones!), shadowing, and chatting online are all great ways to improve your fluency.

I’ve always found that trying to ‘think’ in a second language as much as possible helps. Inventing conversations, imagining how you would say this or that in English, and generally talking to yourself may all be signs of being slightly mad, but they’re also very helpful.

Still, my number one advice is to talk to English speakers as much as possible (in as many contexts as possible, too)

If you spend an hour day or more, you’ll improve remarkably quickly. I’d expect you to be very good within a year, especially if you manage to spend time in an English speaking country.

What is a great and effective way to learn German without Rosetta Stone?

April 29, 2010 - 5:09 pm 1 Comment

I have been trying for some time to learn how speak German as a second language from some free websites. However they are not that great of a teaching method, but great stepping stones.

So if you could appoint me to a website or a torrent that is effective that is not Rosetta Stone (or requires a headset) I would greatly appreciate it =)

Go to

http://www.dw-world.de/dw/0,,2469,00.html

it is a free website where you can learn German. There are interactive programs, podcast, and mp3 you can use.

"Deutsch Interaktiv" has been effective in teaching me German.
