Learning to play guitar. Should I learn all the pentatonic scales first instead of the major scales?

March 28, 2010 - 7:23 am 7 Comments

Ive been told that most riffs are pentatonic scales. Would learning all the major scales first take up my time before I can recognize and play riffs?

The pentatonic scale is easier to learn because 2 notes are left out of the major scale for each octave. Also, don’t learn all the major or pentatonics scales all at once. It will become a mind numbing chore and no fun. Learn a scale in a key of a song you like and play along with the song. This reinforces the scale and then you can move out from there.

What language do the population of Sri-Lanka speak and what’s the culture like there please?

March 28, 2010 - 7:23 am 2 Comments

I don’t want web sites, just your own knowledge or experience please.

There are two main ethnic groups in Sri Lanka – the Sinhalese and the Tamils, and they speak Sinhalese and Tamil respectively. Most educated people know English.

Most Sinhalese are Budhhists, and most Tamils are Hindus. However, there are Christians and Muslims in a good number too.

The question about culture is too general, so it would be good if you looked at the Wikipedia site:

What does spiritually speaking mean when the question is literal?

March 28, 2010 - 7:23 am 5 Comments

I understand how to answer "spiritually speaking, where do you go when you die?" but for something like "spiritually speaking, do you like eggs?" either you do or you dont. its not like if your speaking spirtually speaking you are going to change your position on eggs.

Im going to guess "spiritually speaking"is when said when the asker wants answers only from spiritual people, IE, retards/anti-rational people?

It’s a way from keeping the Yahoo! filter from catching a question that is off subject, i.e., it isn’t about religion or spiritually.

If they came right out and asked "So do you like eggs?" the chances are greater that some report-bot somewhere in the Yahoo! Answers HQ would find it, delete it, and give that person a violation notice.

The theory is, when the word "spiritually" appears in the question, it’s less likely that it’ll be found out.

What language you should speak to your baby when you’re mix marriage couple?

March 28, 2010 - 7:23 am 30 Comments

I’m Asian and my husband is European. We both are not English native speakers but we use English to communicate to each other even though we speak the other’s native language.

I have an arguement with my husband which language we will speak to the baby. I’m now pregnant.

I think we should speak in each of our native language. He thinks that we should speak English to the baby as it’s a more important language and it’s the language that binds the two of us.

I argue that the baby can go to English education system later and will learn English. He thinks it would confuse the baby having to speak in too many languages. But I think as long as one is consistent with the language that one speak to the baby, the baby can understand. Besides the baby will take my husband’s nationality so it makes sense to speak in the language according to his/her passport. And the baby will be at least perfectly billingual if not trilingual.

Any thoughts?

Mother should speak her native language, father his, the baby will learn English listening to the two of you and by playing. Your child will pick up all three simultaneously and not even know he is learning it. If not, he won’t be able to talk to his grandparents and will miss out on a lot.

How can I learn how to build an engine, learn about the underside of a car, learn different parts blah etc?

Is it practical to learn German if there are so many different dialects?

March 28, 2010 - 7:23 am 8 Comments

I’ve always wanted to learn a new language. This month I began teaching myself German (just for fun). However, I’ve recently learned about the different dialects in Germany and how, for the most part, they have a hard time understanding one another. So, if I learn traditional German, will it have any practical use – will I understand anyone in Germany.

While there may be dialects, the basis for the language is the same and you should learn the "proper German". If a German cannot understand you then it would be that person’s problem, nt yours.

The same problem exists in almost any language and the dialects are essentially variations from a specific standard basis.

P.S. If you had ever studied Latin you would find learning German much easier from the standpoint of grammar rules (not vocabulary). They are nearly identical.
